Generative Scores

2022 – 2023

Compositions made as interpretations in response to three graphic scores. Influenced by experimental composers and artists of the 20th century who presented musical scores through unconventional visual notation, visualising music using abstract forms, allowing the performers to decipher the images in their own way. By generating visuals rather than creating them from scratch, the viewer is left to question the ownership of the work, and how AI will alter the role of artists in the future.

Created using a combination of artificial intelligence and digital drawing, utilising an indeterminate process. Miriam Bean took on the role of curator (more than creator), picking and editing the works from a larger selection of AI-generated images. In response, these drawings were used for Francis’ musical interpretation, prompting expressive musical compositions based on the shapes and forms featured in the scores.
